Autumn is here and everyone is hurrying out to get their pumpkin-spice lattes. Not me. I’m staying in and watching a month-long movie marathon of all the classics. No, not Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre or the like. I’m talking Creature Features, Mad Scientists, questionable B-movies and the ever-popular Old Dark House genre. The classic movies based on literature do have their place but not in my October line-up. Sure, I’ll allow a few movies made after 1969 but only if they come after 1979. We hold to a fairly strict no movies from the 1970s with VERY FEW exceptions. These nights with the classics bring back old friends each year: Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Una O’Conner, Dwight Frye, Vincent Price and many, many more. It also introduces me to new characters, and you never know when you might find that next gem to add to your collection.
I don’t believe in celebrating Halloween as a holiday. I believe that it has been long associated with the enjoyment of evil things. Rather, I enjoy October’s atmosphere. The longer, cooler nights that allow a person’s imagination to run wild. My October culminates on the 31st with the all-time best movie for this month: Arsenic and Old Lace! No spoilers, but if you haven’t seen it—trust me—you should.
I absolutely LOVE the Autumn! The crisp weather, the food, the comfy clothes and the general good feeling of the season. I like to enjoy it to the fullest. So, I split my Autumn into two parts. In October we have fun. Orange, brown, golds and reds pop up and adorn every surface in our house. Outside are a few pumpkins and other autumnal adornments. No scary décor here. While inside we have food made in a crockpot: chili, soup and roasts. Rich desserts appear, along with caramel apples and apple cider for those cool evenings.
I grew up in a climate that mostly stayed the same, devoid of seasonal changes. I wouldn’t trade the changing of the seasons for anything now.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
